The SCP stories and universe have always had a relatively fringe community of passionate writers and fans before gaining a bit of the spotlight among major media outlets like CNET in 2013. The Foundation will do whatever it takes to protect the world from the SCPs. This includes carrying out dubious, unethical, and sometimes downright inhumane experiments in the name of the greater good, such as using D-class personnel, a.k.a. prisoners from prisons all around the world, as (usually unwilling) human test subjects to learn more about the abilities of an SCP, and how the scientists at the Foundation could use the knowledge to improve the current containment methods for that specific SCP.

Note that although not all SCPs are hostile in nature, the friendlier ones are few and far between, amounting to only a handful out of the total number of SCPs cataloged and classified so far.

Besides thousands of stories about the Foundation, the wiki also houses a massive database of “Special Containment Procedures” that were written by volunteers and contributors to the site, often in a deadpan, factual, and scientific manner, much like a research report, complete with illustrations and even photos of the purported location where the SCP was encountered, or supposed dissected parts of the contained SCP.

The very first “case file on SCP-173” was uploaded by an anonymous user, who was later identified as Wesley "Moto42" Williams. Since then, the database of case files has ballooned, covering detailed “containment procedures” and previous encounters with over 7000 unique SCPs.

The stories, case files, and the SCP universe (as well as the inverse and outverse) have attracted an enormous fan base, with many of them going on to create unique fan-driven works, including books, comics, video games, as well as animated and live-action short films.
